How to Dress to Hide a Belly Bulge

A guide for women on how to dress to hide a belly bulge. Style and fashion advice.

One area of the body that women are conscious of and are often keen to conceal is the belly region. Whether a woman has put on a little weight or just had a child, a belly bulge is something that a lot of women wish to hide. However, this can easily be achieved if you know how to dress appropriately. Here are some tips on how to dress so that a belly bulge can be concealed.

Wear Clothes That Fit

It is a common misconception that wearing loose clothes will make you look slimmer and cover up areas of the body that you dislike. In fact, the reverse is true as the extra fabric makes you look larger and it is clear what you are trying to conceal. Wearing tailored, well fitting clothes streamlines your figure. In terms of the belly area, tailored pants can appear to flatten the stomach. However, avoid trousers and skirts that have a front fastening or detail around the waistline as this will draw attention to the area that you are trying to conceal.

Accentuate Your Good Points

It is possible to make your belly appear slimmer, simply by drawing the eye away from this area of your body. Everybody has parts of the body that they like, whether this is their breasts, their legs or their bum. By drawing attention towards the areas of your body that you like, you are drawing attention away from the areas that you dislike. To do this, wear items of clothing that are patterned or have additional detail on them on the good parts of your body and wear block colours on the areas of your body that you are trying to conceal.

Avoid Pleats, Frills and Elasticised Waists

Additional details such as pleating and frills will add an extra layer around your belly. Avoid wearing clothes that have such detail around this area. Not only will they make your belly appear larger, they will also draw the eye towards your belly.

Think About Patterns

Solid, block colours can have a slimming effect and detailed, busy patterns can create a body part to appear larger. Think carefully about the patterns that you are wearing and whether they flatter the belly region of your body.

Choose Clothes Shape Carefully

The shape of the clothes that you choose can make a real difference. Avoid tops that finish on the waistline. Instead, choose tops that are fitted around the breasts and then flows to approximately the top of your legs. In jeans and trousers, opt for stretch fit and bootleg cut styles. As they taper in and then widen out around the ankle, it gives the illusion of a slimmer and more balanced body shape, thus drawing attention away from the belly.
